A national homebuying survey found 77% of recent US buyers spent more than planned, showing how often budgets shifted while balancing price, location, and features.
Tradeoffs extended beyond price: 21% bought fewer bedrooms than wanted, and 21% accepted a smaller yard to secure a home during purchase.
Common compromises included financing shifts: 29% made larger down payments, 29% accepted higher mortgage rates, 28% took larger mortgages, and 15% accepted another neighborhood.
Among surveyed baby boomers, 53% stayed within budget, while millennials and Generation X were most likely to spend at least $80K more than planned.
The survey also showed guidance matters: 34% wanted more education from their agent and lender, while buyers benefit from defining must-haves before touring homes.
